What happens after you apply

Our team reviews applications on a rolling basis and matches fellows to projects based on project needs, qualifications, experience, and area of expertise. Because each project is different, timelines for project invitations can vary.

If your background matches the needs of an active or upcoming project, a member of our team will contact you with next steps.

Please note:

• Submitting an application does not guarantee placement on a project
• Project invitations are based on current partner demand and project availability
• Some projects may require additional evaluations, training exercises, or portfolio reviews before selection

The Handshake AI Fellowship is designed to support high-quality work for our AI Lab partners, so project selection is competitive and based on overall fit and performance.

After applying, your Handshake AI dashboard may display messaging similar to the following:

How it works:
We invite Fellows to join projects on a rolling basis, depending on fit and availability.

Getting started:
When there's a match you'll be invited to complete a paid training exercise. Once you successfully complete training, your project will begin.

Stay updated:
If you're selected for a project, you'll receive an email from our outreach team. Keep an eye out.... new projects are added every week!

Check spam or junk folder:
If you haven't heard from us, please periodically check your spam or junk folder, as our emails may sometimes be misdirected.

What should I do in the meantime?

There’s nothing additional you need to do at this time. If you’re selected for a project, our team will reach out directly by email.

In the meantime, you may find it helpful to:

• Continue building experience in your area of expertise
• Familiarize yourself with topics related to AI model evaluation, reasoning, and LLM workflows. To learn more, check out Illustrating Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF)
• Create your own AI projects using AI Showcase in Handshake to continue developing your skills and portfolio. To learn more about this, refer to AI Showcase in Handshake. 
• Monitor your email regularly for project invitations or follow-up communication

Projects are added regularly, and new opportunities may become available over time. Not hearing from us right away does not necessarily mean your application has been declined — it may simply mean we do not currently have a project that matches your background.
