HELP CENTER

Whether you’re just getting started or have been here for a while, this is your one-stop shop for everything you need to be successful on Handshake AI.

Introduction to the Handshake AI program

The Handshake AI program connects current students, recent graduates, and professionals with flexible, project-based opportunities to help train and improve large language models (LLMs). Fellows use their human judgment and subject-matter expertise to strengthen the performance of models developed by leading AI labs.

What is the Handshake AI Fellowship?

Handshake AI enables students and graduates to apply human judgment and expertise to improve large language models (LLMs) developed by frontier AI labs. The work you can find on Handshake AI is flexible and project-based, allowing you to earn (and use your expertise) while you're in school or working.

Project work through Handshake AI may include:

  • Reviewing and editing AI-generated content
  • Annotating datasets
  • Suggesting improvements to model outputs
  • Helping shape how AI tools perform in real-world scenarios

Participants are matched to projects based on their background, experience, and project demand. Assignments are made according to project needs rather than personal preference.

Handshake AI projects do not involve screening or evaluating candidates on the Handshake career platform. Fellows support the improvement of AI models in specific subject areas while Handshake continues to explore broader applications of AI internally.

Who is the Handshake AI Fellowship for?

The Handshake AI program is for current students, graduates, and professionals that are interested in working on project-based AI opportunities.

There is no prior experience required to be a part of the Handshake AI program. Certain projects will require specialized subject-matter experts, while other projects have a more generalized focus.

Note: Handshake does not sponsor or facilitate school credit through the Handshake AI Fellowship. This program is open to US-based bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students, candidates, and graduates with valid work or training authorization (e.g., F-1/OPT, J-1, H-1B). Participants are responsible for ensuring compliance with their visa conditions and confirming eligibility with their program or visa sponsor prior to signing up.

Pay

Compensation varies by project and depends on factors such as project type, subject expertise, and experience. You'll always have access to the the project's hourly rate and any applicable bonus details before joining.

How much time do I need to commit?

The program is designed to be flexible and fit around your existing schedule.

Fellows can contribute based on their availability. Some work a few hours a week, while others contribute more heavily depending on availability and bandwidth. There's no expectation to be online at specific times or to hit a set number of hours.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Some projects may set weekly hour caps to help maintain consistency and quality across contributors.
  • Task availability can change quickly, so engaging promptly when work becomes available is the best way to maximize opportunities on a project.
  • Consistent participation matters. Fellows who remain inactive for extended periods while tasks are available may have project access reassigned. Even small but regular contributions help maintain good standing.
