Working as an AI Trainer with frontier labs through Handshake AI
Curious what it’s actually like to work as an AI trainer through Handshake AI? Whether you’re exploring flexible work, curious about how AI models are trained, or already part of the Handshake AI community, here’s a straightforward breakdown of what to expect grounded in how the work actually operates.
Do I have to be a student to do this?
No. While Handshake is widely known for connecting students and early talent with opportunities, Handshake AI trainer roles are open to people at all stages of their careers.
What matters most is your ability to apply your knowledge, professional skills, or domain expertise while following detailed guidelines to produce high-quality work.
Our AI trainer program includes:
- Current undergrad students
- Recent graduates from universities and community colleges
- Researchers and PhDs
- Working professionals
There’s no single “right” background.
What does an AI trainer actually do?
AI trainers help improve and advance AI models by completing specific tasks designed by known frontier labs. There are several leading organizations building and researching cutting-edge AI models who want, and need, human intelligence and expertise to make AI smarter and more reliable.
Depending on the project, your work might include:
- Writing or evaluating responses to prompts
- Reviewing AI-generated outputs for accuracy or reasoning capabilities
- Challenging and stumping the model on specific tasks
- Labeling or categorizing data
- Providing detailed feedback that helps models improve
This is detail-oriented work. Your judgment and reasoning directly influence how models behave in real-world scenarios.
What to expect day-to-day: Your experience will vary depending on the project you're on, but in general you can expect to log in, review your available tasks, and work through them at your own pace. Some projects move quickly, while others are longer-running.
Room to grow: Fellows who consistently deliver high-quality work may have the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities, such as reviewer or specialist roles. If you're interested in advancing within a project, that's a conversation worth having with your project lead.
Is this a full time job?
Handshake AI is not a full-time employment opportunity. It is a flexible, project-based fellowship program designed to fit around your existing commitments — whether that's school, a full-time job, or other responsibilities.
Work on Handshake AI is contract-based and varies in availability depending on the projects you're matched to. There are no guaranteed hours, and task availability fluctuates based on the needs of our partner labs. Some fellows contribute consistently over time, while others work more sporadically depending on what's available.
This structure works well for people who want:
- Flexible, remote work that fits around their work, school, and life schedule
- Supplemental income
- Exposure to real AI development without committing to a traditional role
Is work always available?
This is one of the most important things to understand up front: AI trainer work fluctuates over time.
Projects can ramp up quickly and they can wind down just as fast. In some cases, availability can change within a matter of days. While Handshake AI works to give advance notice when projects are ending, there’s no guarantee of continuous work week to week.
Our top priority is being as transparent as possible with our AI trainer community. As soon as we’re aware of changes to project availability and are able to share details, we communicate those updates directly while continuing to build strong, trusted partnerships that make this work possible.
Because of this, we encourage AI trainers to:
- Work more when projects are active, if their schedule allows
- Treat the role as flexible or supplemental rather than relying on it as a sole source of income
When a project ends, AI trainers may be considered for other opportunities, but timing and availability can be difficult to predict.
Is there training or support?
Yes! Every project includes structured onboarding and ongoing support, led by a project lead. Training is primarily asynchronous, with documentation, examples, and tools designed to help you get answers as you work. Some projects also offer live office hours or additional support sessions depending on the scope and need. Many AI trainers join without prior AI experience, and our Learning and Training team and project leads are there to provide guidance throughout the lifecycle of each project.
Each project includes:
- Clear instructions and task guidelines
- Examples of high-quality work
You’re not expected to be an AI expert on day one. The goal is to help you succeed within each project’s specific scope and expectations.
How do people get offered new projects?
New projects are offered based on a combination of performance, fit, and project needs. Each project is scoped to specific domains, degree backgrounds, or skill sets, so having the right academic or professional background matters when matching fellows to new work.
Your performance on past projects plays a major role in:
- Whether you’re prioritized for future opportunities
- How quickly you’re invited when new projects launch
Most projects also require project-specific screening or assessments, since each Frontier Lab has its own goals, standards, and task types. Even experienced Handshake AI trainers may need to complete new evaluations to join different projects. This helps ensure the right fit and maintains high quality across every collaboration.
Who tends to do well as an AI trainer?
This work is a strong fit for people who:
- Enjoy independent, focused work
- Pay close attention to detail
- Are comfortable with ambiguity and change
- Want flexible, remote opportunities
- Are curious about how AI systems are built and improved
If you adapt quickly and care about doing high-quality work, most projects feel engaging and rewarding.
What's the big picture?
Working as an AI trainer through Handshake AI means contributing to frontier AI development—while maintaining autonomy over your schedule.
It isn’t always predictable. It isn’t always steady. But for many Handshake AI Fellows, it’s a meaningful way to:
- Apply expertise to real AI systems
- Build experience in an emerging field
- Earn income with flexibility
- Stay connected to leading AI labs shaping the future
